WHCI's Motown Ensemble is a Stage/Jazz Band course with a heavy emphasis on the great 1960's Motown Music from Detroit and STAX records from Memphis. This music literally changed the face of all music forever: Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, the Supremes, the Jackson Five, Martha Reeves, Stevie Wonder, the Funk Brothers! This year's group is also into the Tower of Power and other high level funk groups! We study and play all of it and it is a BLAST! This group is HEAVY! Many of our top saxophone players played flute or clarinet in Concert Band in grades 9 and 10, and then switched to saxophone near the end of grade 10 to prepare for the Grade 11 and 12 Motown Band! We recently played a fantastic Motown Medley for the Martin Luther King Celebration Concert at Hamilton Place, featuring Joshawn Smith on Vocals! |
